Job Description:

The Director Of Special Education Is Responsible For
Program Leadership
·  Monitor the development and implementation of all aspects of the special education program process
·  Plans, develops, implements, and administers programs and services to meet identified needs, including development and implementation of new programs, systems, and services
·  Advises Principal and Assistant Principal on overall direction of the school’s Special Education Services and is accountable for end results affecting the special education program and the development, implementation or modification of new and existing special service programs.
·  Provide administrative leadership and management oversight of the school’s special education program
·  Helps in the hiring operations of the special education department, including the interviewing, and assignment of special education personnel, and monitoring the service budgets and expenditures established for special education. 
·  Establish and communicate a school wide philosophy of least restrictive environment for serving special needs students
·  Guide the development and implementation of long-range and short-range plans for achieving special education goals and objective in alignment with the school’s vision
·  Direct special education services for all student with disabilities and ensure that students have access to the school’s core curriculum
·  Establish procedures for the placement, evaluation, assignment and reassessment of students with special needs
·  Monitor the development and coordination of complete and cumulative individual records of all students receiving special services
·  Supervise the collection and maintenance of student and staff data and reporting
·  Review federal and state legislation/regulations related to special education; identify and share the impact of changes on the school’s program
·  Monitor compliance with District policies and regulations and work with legal to develop required policy changes
·  Maintain open lines of communication regarding special education with all interested parties; respond to concerns of parents, teachers, school and district administrators, and community members
People Leadership
·  Provides leadership to members of the Special Education team and to the entire school community related to special education
·  Coordinate and supervise the activities of special service personnel and staff
·  Lead the planning and implementation of staff development and in-service programs
·  Participate fully in all school leadership meetings, functions, and events
Professional Relationships & Expectations
·  Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with scholars, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis
·  Collaborate with peers to enhance instructional environment and meet multiple demands of school operations
·  Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with scholars, parents, peers, and community
·  Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, collaborating with peers, and working with parents to maximize student learning

Job Requirements:

·  Master's degree required
·  Special Education certification
·  Belief and alignment with school’s core beliefs and educational philosophy
·  Minimum of 5-7 years of special education teaching and leadership experience preferred.
·  Ability to create strong strategic plans; effective executer as well as a proven record of successful strategic outcomes
·  Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment; flexible, able to work autonomously as well as take directions as needed. 
·  Ability to work with scholars, their families, partners, and community members in a variety of capacities
·  Ability to consistently and fairly articulate and enforce school rules
·  Strong organizational skills; extremely careful attention to detail and follow-through
·  Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
·  Strong communication and ability to build and maintain relationships with all stakeholders
