Job Description:

POSITION: HEAD START TEACHER                                                                                                             STATUS: EXEMPT EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION: FULL TIME

OVERVIEWThe Head Start Teacher is to provide high-quality early childhood curriculum and program services in a safe and supervised educational setting for children while, they are within the Head Start environment (classroom, outdoor play area, and field trips). Promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children. While encouraging parent involvement in all aspects of the program. Develop individual goals for each child, provide an ongoing assessment of their progress and facilitate transition into kindergarten. Must, meet requirements of the Federal Head Start Performance Standards inclusive of Early Learning, School Readiness, and State Early Learning policies and procedures.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS: As required by the Head Start Performance Standards and State Standards)

  1. Ensure that all developmental screenings and assessments are completed for each child within the child’s first forty-five (45) of attendance and submitted to the Master Teacher.
  2. Work with the Agency’s Health Department to ensure that hearing, vision, and dental screenings are completed for each child within the child’s first forty-five (45) of attendance.
  3. Ensure that each child’s anecdotal notes are entered into the computer system (Child Plus)
weekly.
  1. Ensure that each child is academically assessed quarterly and all results are entered in “GOLD”
(computer system) at least 24 hours prior to the due dates.
  1. Ensure that parent/teacher conferences are conducted as scheduled by the Education Department.
  2. Implement the “CLASS” requirements within the classroom at all times and attain/maintain a
score of five (5) in all required domains during the first academic quarter.
  1. Implement the “ECERS” (Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale) daily to attain/maintain a rating of 4 during the first academic quarter. “ECERS’ is monitored quarterly by each school district and The Leaguers, Inc.
  2. Maintain Head Start (federal) and State licensing Health and Safety standards at all times.
  3. Conduct two (2) mandatory educational home visits (one at the beginning of the school year, and another in the spring of the school year.
  4. Must implement the “Positive Behavior Guidance and Discipline” plan daily.
  5. Must implement the “Active Supervision Plan” at all times.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: PROVIDING QUALITY EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

  1. Utilize integrated Creative Curriculum plans, which reflect mandated domains and elements, parental and cultural influences, and promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children.
  2. Ensure the implementation of all goals and objectives as outlined in the Educational Plans, Head Start Performance Standards, and School Readiness Goals.
  3. Coordinate special needs staff in the classroom when indicated, developing a collaborative approach that benefits all children in the classroom.
  4. Adapt curriculum to address and meet individual goals for children as identified in their individualized education plans. Assess the children’s individual and group needs, attending to special needs, specific interests, strengths, and concerns.
  5. Prepare, submit, and post weekly lesson plans on the classroom bulletin board.
  6. Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem-solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice-making; ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully to the children’s answers.
  7. Establish weekly goals that promote individual and group educational activities that include other

Head Start Components.
Ensure classroom materials support developmentally appropriate curriculum plans, and create and change learning centers as needed.
  1. Teacher participation and attendance in all site and general staff meetings are mandatory and are considered a part of the job.
  2. Attendance and participation in all parent meetings are mandatory and are considered a part of the job.
  3. Ensure that weekly lesson plans and menus are initialed by a parent.
  4. Attend regularly scheduled team meetings to plan for and deliver collaborative services across all Head Start content areas.
  5. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
  1. Has primary responsibility for the implementation of all classroom procedures andactivities.
  2. Responsible for the health, welfare, and safety of all children in their care.
  3. Ensure that no child is left alone or unsupervised at any time.
  4. Ensure that “Active Supervision Procedures and Techniques” are implemented at alltimes.
  5. Ensure that all “TASKS ARE ON TIME” based on the daily schedule.
  6. Ensure that children are totally engaged on the playground and that “Active Supervision”
methods are utilized.
  1. Ensure that there are lesson plans and materials available for substitutes.
  2. Ensure that classrooms and bulletin boards are ready to receive children and families on the first day of school.
  3. Ensure that classroom bulletin boards remain current.
  4. Ensure that classrooms are arranged to provide interest and deter accidents.
  5. Ensure that classrooms are clean and orderly at all times.
  6. Conduct three (3) mandatory parent/teacher conferences during the school year.
  7. Attendance and participation in all children’s field trips are mandatory (please note that one
or two trips per year may extend beyond 3:00 p.m. and is considered a part of the job).
  1. Ensure that all hazardous materials are locked away and out of reach of children at all times.
  2. Ensure that classroom supplies and equipment are packed for storage by the last day of the school year.
  3. Ensure that classroom walls are cleared of all paperwork and tape by the last day of the school year.
  4. Ensure that class inventory and supply needs are completed and submitted by the last day of the school year.
  5. Sign off on all inventory and supply orders submitted.

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Educational requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K) or a Bachelor's Degree or higher that includes coursework equivalent to a major in Early Childhood Education. Transcripts are required to validate educational requirements.
  • Head Start Abbott Teachers must have P3 Certification,
  • Pre-school (ages 3-5) classroom teaching experience is required, two years is preferred. Experience should include the ability to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of all children including at risk, special needs, gifted, and culturally diverse populations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills needed. Bilingual English/Spanish skills are highly desirable.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, internet and e-mail.
  • Pediatric CPR & First Aid Certified (training provided).
  • Drug Test is required at hire.
  • Health Physical is required at hire and updated annually.
  • Federal and State background check required prior to hiring

  • Daily kneeling, stooping, bending, and sitting on the floor to attend to children's needs.
