PURPOSE:
To assist non-native speaking students of the English language to become proficient in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills in English.
To strive to make students independent and self-reliant in the English language.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
- Plans lessons jointly with the student's regular classroom teacher to assure student success in the regular classroom.
- Consults the regular classroom teacher on learning strategies for English Language Learner.
- Supports students affectively in adjusting to their environment.
- Keeps accurate student records on each individual student's performance, as required.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and - in harmony with the goals - establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
- Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Recognizes the learning disabilities of students and seeks the assistance of district specialists as required.
- Consults with colleagues, students and/or parents on a regular basis.
- Assists the administration in implementing and supervising all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional associates and resource assistants and/or volunteers and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attends staff meeting and serves on staff committees as required.
- Supervises extracurricular activities that relate to individual teaching assignments or areas assigned by the building administrator.
- Performs such other duties as directed by the building administrator
