POSITION: LANGUAGE, SPEECH AND HEARING THERAPIST
DEFINITION:
Under supervision of the SELPA Executive Director or designee will plan and implement a developmentally appropriate program meeting the unique needs of speech and language impaired students.
ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS:
- Provides language and speech screening services.
- Determines eligibility for speech and language services based on criteria cited in the California Code of Regulations, Title 5.
- Participates as a member of the Individualized Education Program Team.
- Provides direct therapeutic services as prescribed in the child’s individualized education program.
- Provides indirect service activities related to the case management of each child with speech, language and hearing disorders.
- Provides formal and informal in-service training programs for teachers.
- Participates on diagnostic and student study teams.
- Functions as a site-level resource on speech, language and hearing issues.
- Uses effective behavior management techniques to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Prepares schedules and timelines to implement therapeutic services.
- Evaluates need for and arranges for specialized equipment and materials.
- Maintains professional competency through participation in in-service activities provided by the county office and other professional agencies.
KNOWLEDGEOF:
- Childhood developmental levels including an in-depth knowledge of normal communication processes
- Evaluation procedures to assess the bases of speech and language disorders
- Clinical techniques that improve or eradicate speech and language disorders
- Assistive technology and use of augmentative communication aids and techniques
- Unique learning needs commonly manifested by specific impairments

- Possess oral and written communication skills
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others

- Maintain records, compile and verify data and prepare reports
- Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions
