Job Description:

CLASSIFICATION: Certificated SALARY LEVEL: Certificated Salary Schedule WORK YEAR: 184.50 Days DEFINITION Teach students with special needs, identifies needs in relation to the curriculum objectives; applies a program of instruction consistent with students' learning needs, curriculum objectives, and instructional materials; uses appropriate teaching strategies; assesses student progress; fulfills all duties associated with being a case manager; creates and manages a classroom environment conducive to student learning; and communicates with parents regularly regarding the students' academic and social progress. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Essential Duties •Provide an atmosphere that stimulates the emotional growth of children relative to self-awareness, decision-making, responsibility, positive interpersonal relationships, and conflict resolution. •Provide experiences necessary to remediate each child’s learning disability, behavioral disorder, and/or emotional disturbance. •Provide positive learning experiences in Reading, Math, Language Arts, Spelling, Music, and Physical Education for children with special needs who are assigned to the class. •Emphasize reintegration for each child into the regular school program in one or more areas. •Provide means of evaluating the child’s progress. •Performs academic assessments, both informal and formal, to help gauge student growth, progress and continued areas of need. •Writes academic reports that reflect the results of the assessments and academic recommendations based on those results. •Facilitates IEP meetings for students who they are assigned as case manager. •Collects information on case managed students from teachers, administrators, counselors and service providers. •Communicate with and inform parents on an ongoing basis regarding individual child’s progress and needs. •Encourages parents to provide at-home educational support. •Listens and responds to parent requests for information/assistance and responds through conferences, telephone conversations, and written communications within a reasonable timeframe and in a professional manner. •Provides specialized instruction to a variety of special needs students including but not limited to students with mild to moderate learning disability, emotional disturbance, speech and language delays, mental retardation, down syndrome and any other qualifying criteria for special education. •Develop plans and procedures in conjunction with regular teaching personnel for each child being integrated into the regular class. •Provide support and assistance to regular teaching personnel and act as a resource teacher to other staff members. •Participate in district in-service training and maintain competence through self-selected professional development. •Maintain systematic records and provide annual written evaluations of each student. •Improves teaching effectiveness by responding to supervisor's performance evaluation recommendations and participating in required school and district sponsored in-service activities. •Maintains standards of professionalism and abides by the tenets of the "Code of Ethics of the Teaching Profession"-State of California. Other Duties •Performs other related duties as assigned pursuant to the Master Contract. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone and business machines; vision sufficient to read printed materials; hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distances on the telephone and addressing groups; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site), drive an automobile, and to respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to lift 25 pounds alone or more with a two person lift; physical stamina sufficient to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: •An appropriate California Teaching Credential. •Graduation from an accredited college or university. Knowledge of: •Curriculum that is to be taught. •Effective classroom management techniques. •Effective teaching strategies for learning disabled students. •Basic components of a lesson plan. •The use of assessment tools •IEP components, meetings, requirements •Special education law, paperwork and process (timelines) Ability to: •Stimulate and motivate students to learn. •Interact with and maintain a cooperative relationship with students, staff and parents. •Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. •Meet schedules and timelines. •Work independently with appropriate direction. •Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. •Use technology and computer software applications appropriate to the work environment. •Modify curriculum to make it more accessible for special needs students. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS •Previous experience working with linguistically and culturally diverse groups. •Ability to speak a language in addition to English. •Successful experience in the area of conflict resolution. •Successful experience as a classroom teacher.
