JOB FUNCTIONS

To provide support for the OMI focus that every graduate will be college and career ready (through) Mastery of the Common Core Standards (attained by) Reading at Lexile level of 1300 or more. OMI is deepening its STEM offerings and introducing formal Career and Technical Education (CTE) learning with the introduction of new courses for middle and high school students

JOB DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Middle School Principal and the CTE Career Pathways Manager, the Middle School Music Teacher is responsible for teaching music education to students in grades 6 through 8. He/she will help OMI students to develop in their appreciation and performance of music through a variety of experiences, which include singing and playing instruments. The Middle School Music Teacher will be part of the OMI CTE Performing Arts Career Pathway and will have two main roles in the 2019-2020 school year.

  1. Develop and teach 4-6  sections of middle school and/or high school music classes that easily support continued enrollment in the high school Performing Arts career pathway.

  2. Participate as a member of the CTE department to grow and vertically align the Performing Arts career pathway, integrated work-based learning and connect pathway to early college credit. Other electives and afterschool club experiences in STEAM are also a possibility.

The Music teacher will be supported by, and needs to collaborate with, other members of the OMI community including the principal, the technology director and staff, and others in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) program offerings.

Job Requirements:

JOB QUALIFICATION

The Middle School Music Teacher fulfills the following duties:  

  • Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree, must be eligible for employment in the US and pass a criminal background check

  • Hold or have the ability to apply for a California Technical Education Teaching Credential in Performing Arts with 3 years of work experience directly related to the industry.

  • Interest and willingness to work in a highly collaborative environment

  • Demonstrated commitment to the success of underrepresented students

  • Experience with teaching middle and high school-aged students.

  • Experience teaching a student-centered, inquiry-oriented, hands-on curriculum

  • Knowledge of and experience with project-based learning  

  • Determine each student’s learning level and select appropriate music, books and instructional aids to enhance learning.  

  • Teach skills in music comprehension/appreciation, harmony, and explorations in instrumental music and choral music.  

  • Plan all lessons in accordance with OMI curriculum guidelines and update curriculum as needed.  

  • Provide musical performances for assemblies, open houses, concerts, etc.

  • Communicate formally (report cards, conferences, etc.) and informally (phone calls, notes, personal contacts, blogs) with parents.

  • Maintain student records and evaluate each pupil’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding.  

  • Requisition musical instruments and instructional supplies as necessary.

  • Schedule required maintenance of school equipment/instruments.

  • Maintain care/responsibility for school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.

  • Arrange for an accompanist, if needed, and conveys information on rehearsals and performances.  

  • Collaborate in setting calendar dates for all concerts.  

  • Make arrangements for OMI’s participation in regional and state contests, if appropriate.  

  • Establish and maintain a climate conducive to learning and handle classroom discipline following Positive Discipline guidelines.  

  • Fulfill all other responsibilities as assigned by the Middle School Principal and the CTE Career Pathways Manager.

  • In addition to the specific tasks outlined above, it is the responsibility of the Music Teacher to:

    • Understand and support OMI’s mission and philosophy and to promote a positive image of the school.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Emotional stability and physical condition necessary to perform the duties of the job class:

  • Ability to read, prepare, and proofread documents and perform assigned duties

  • Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels) to exchange information in person and on the telephone

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to perform duties

  • Ability to communicate and obtain information in English

  • Able to stand, walk, run and sit; using fingers repetitively; use wrists or hands in a twisting motion or while applying pressure; use both hands simultaneously; have rapid mental or muscular coordination

  • Able to lift moderately heavy objects, have the ability to occasionally lift up to 5 pounds, frequently lift up to 5 pounds and constantly lift a minimum of 5 pounds; have the capability to push 30 pounds at maximum force and possess the capability to pull to pounds maximum force

  • Able to bend at the waist, kneel crouch, stoop, and reach overhead above the shoulders and horizontally; ascend and descend stairs

  • Able to work office machines and equipment in a safe and effective manner

  • Able to work in a wide range of weather conditions

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Primary work will be indoors and travel may be required
