The Lower Kuskokwim School District is the largest rural school

district in Alaska, in number of sites, teachers, and students.

Headquartered in Bethel, the district is comprised of twenty-two

villages as well as five schools in Bethel. These villages are spread

over an area the size of West Virginia and are located along the

Kuskokwim River and coastline of Southwestern Alaska. Over 350

teachers and administrators serve approximately 4000 students,

of mostly Yup’ik (Eskimo) heritage, in kindergarten through grade

twelve. LKSD is the only district in Alaska that has achieved Dis-
trict Accreditation status.
