Eleanor Roosevelt High School was opened in September 2002. It was the product of a grass-roots effort of parents and community leaders to establish a comprehensive, rigorous high school for students on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and has evolved into a highly collaborative, supportive, and engaged school community, serving all of New York City. We opened in a temporary location in Chelsea with 105 ninth graders and a staff of eight. Currently ERHS has over five hundred students and over forty staff members.
Our goal is to cultivate an intellectually-rich environment where we are all committed and engaged as active learners, examining and pushing our own and each others’ thinking, developing communication skills that allow for depth, clarity and expression, articulating and maintaining high standards, and establishing a culture where academic success is judged by the depth and breadth of one’s ability to question as well as his/her understanding. Eleanor Roosevelt High School has evolved into a highly sought-after, well-respected, college-preparatory NYC high school.
At Eleanor Roosevelt High School, our community of students, faculty, staff, administrators, and families thrive in a diverse, collaborative, and supportive environment. We strive to be empathetic, active, and reflective listeners as we advocate for ourselves and each other. Our educational priorities are to provide rigor and encourage curiosity in all academic disciplines, including the infusion of artistic elements. Our mission is to create a foundation for students to become life-long learners who are critical thinkers, effective communicators, and creative problem solvers.
Historically, members of our community have experienced discrimination, prejudice, and harmful biases that we acknowledge and continue to learn from as individuals and as a school community. We seek to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all individuals that affirms their identities. We stand in solidarity with those who address inequity in our local and global communities. We empower our school community to act with courage, integrity, and leadership as they embrace moral, social, and intellectual challenges.
Our commitment to open, thoughtful exploration ensures that Eleanor Roosevelt High School is a place where questions are as important as answers.
“…as individuals we live cooperatively, and, to the best of our ability, serve the community in which we live…our own success, to be real, must contribute." - Eleanor Roosevelt
