St. Francis- St. Joseph’s Homes for Children
St. Katharine Drexel School offers educational services through its PRRI school program. We offer a middle school and High School courses. We offer small class size, social and emotional support, and a structured program to meet the needs of at-risk students. These services are offered at our school located on the grounds of St. Francis- St. Vincent’s Homes for Children.
The curriculum follows Pennsylvania State Standards. We offer a variety of core subject areas while accommodating all learners. We utilize Smart Board technology in all of our classrooms. We provide accommodations to all students by offering instruction that incorporates technology, hands on activities and experiences outside of the class room as well as traditional classroom modifications.
Our staff is highly qualified, experienced and dedicated to meeting the needs of at-risk students. Our special education program provides specialized instruction and support both in the classroom and through one on one instruction. St. Katharine Drexel is supported through its partnership with the Buck County Intermediate Unit.
In addition to our teaching staff we have a number of experienced support staff to meet the social, emotional and behavioral needs of our students. Our Behavior Management Team is trained to intervene in crisis situations in addition to providing one on one counseling and preventative interventions for students. Our staff also provide classroom support both academic and behaviorally.
We strive to create an environment that supports safety and change for our students. We also use a School Wide Positive Behavior Support System to help promote change in our students. We use daily point sheets, positive reinforcement’s, School Store and Student of the week or month.
School Year Services
St. Katharine Drexel School’s High School program provides instruction in four core subject areas. Each subject area has a varied course selection. Our English curriculum provides instruction in American Literature, British Literature, English I and II. In addition, the emphasis on writing skills, grammar, and vocabulary and test preparation is part of the curriculum in all Literature classes. Our math curriculum provided courses in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry our science Curriculum includes Biology, Physical Science and Earth and space science. Our Social studies courses include Criminal Justice, US Government World History and American History. Additional we offer 5 electives, gym and health. Students are placed according to both their credits needs and level of educational support that is needed. Our teachers provide instruction and accommodations based on the needs of the students while adhering to the Common Core standards. These students receive high school credit after successfully completing the course. If a student is discharged prior to completion of the school year they will receive credit based of the length of their time in the program Ex. 1 marking period will equal .25 credits in a core subject area. These students in the high school program transition between the four classrooms for their instruction.
Students in the Middle School program receive instruction in the 4 major subject areas. Course in the Middle school program include Pre-algebra, World History, World Cultures, and Environmental Science. Our Life Science Curriculum is an introduction to Biology that introduces key concepts for the Keystone Biology test. The middle school students will receive a schedule based on the level of proficiency in math and reading. They will rotate according to their individual schedule through the 4 classrooms in the middle school program.
Summer Program
St. Katharine Drexel School provides an 8-week structured Summer Program that is open to all students. The focus of the summer program is remediation and credit enhancement. The summer program is specifically designed to meet the needs of students in all three of our programs. The program is broken into 2 sessions with a week break prior to each session and a week break prior to the beginning of the next school year.
During the afternoon in the Summer Program, we offer a variety of activities. Some examples of the alternative afternoon activities we offer include gym, computers, cooking, and crochet. On Fridays in the afternoon, there is either a School-wide activity or trip.
Special Education Services
Our Special education staff provides support and instruction in a variety of methods. Our staff teaches individual class and also co teaches with our regular education teacher. We provide support an accommodation to all students according to their individual needs. Our LEA is the Bucks county intermediate Unit. They provide support through our school Psychologist, speech therapy services, Occupational therapy services and Vocational support services.
