All of us who work in and for the Los Altos School District are very proud of our district. We have achieved excellence to a degree rarely seen in public education. This can be seen by our high test scores, dedication of our employees to all students, and the strong support of our community, which voted to support multiple parcel taxes and fund a $150 million bond for school improvements.
All nine of our schools have been named California Distinguished Schools, and many have received additional recognition as National Blue Ribbon Schools. We offer rigorous, consistent academic programs in every subject area. With the help of the Los Altos Educational Foundation, we have expanded our STEM labs at all schools, teach critical thinking skills, and have updated our math, writing and literature programs. Strong PTAs at each school provide thousands of volunteer classroom hours and fund school site-specific educational needs. We are hiring new teachers to achieve our goal to personalize education for every student. We support all district teachers through ongoing training programs and classes designed to deliver an exceptional instructional program that ensures all students succeed.
As a learning community, committed to student achievement and professional growth, we’ve worked together to create a school district we can all be proud of.
OUR DISTRICT The Los Altos School District is located in northwestern Santa Clara County. It encompasses most of the city of Los Altos, half of Los Altos Hills, part of Mountain View, part of Palo Alto, and some unincorporated county lands. The present enrollment is 4,100 students.
HIGH ACHIEVEMENT Historically, students in the Los Altos School District consistent-ly scored at the very top on the California standardized testing assessments of academic achievement. The district’s scores place LASD as a top performing school district in the State of California.
QUALITY INSTRUCTION The Los Altos School District faculty is among the finest in the area. Of the 260 teachers, many have advanced degrees as well as extensive in-service training in their areas of expertise. All Los Altos teachers have completed coursework beyond their credentials. Many of our teachers serve as consultants to other districts and colleges in the area and are recognized as leaders in their field. To ensure staff can focus on making education personal for every student, we maintain an average class size of 23 students in grades TK-3, and 26 students in grades 4-6.
SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT The Los Altos School District is a district of seven elementary schools (TK-6) and two junior high schools (7-8). All of our small, neighborhood schools are welcoming communities where staff and teachers know and support every child.
TEACHER SUPPORT All of our teachers are supported by a team of caring colleagues and Instructional Support Teachers to foster success in the classroom. All first-year teachers are part of the New Teacher Project. Teachers earn salary credit by participating in a district paid after-school training program. Weekly collaboration meetings and an abundance of professional and learning opportunities are provided for all teachers.
