Volunteers of America is a national, faith-based human services organization. We are dedicated to helping individuals and families in need create positive and lasting change through social service programs that support and empower them to live safe, healthy and productive lives.Volunteers of America-Greater New York is the local affiliate of the national organization, Volunteers of America, Inc., and is one of the largest providers of human services in the metropolitan New York area. Founded in New York City in 1896 as a charity staffed by individuals who volunteered to make service their life work, today VOA-Greater New York has 1,300 paid staff that provide life-changing, often life-saving services through 80 programs in New York City, Westchester County and Northern New Jersey.
Our Bronx Early Learning Center is a vibrant and nurturing preschool special education program for children between the ages of 2.9 and 5 years. The early learning center provides services to 236 students in 22 classrooms. In addition to special education services, children may receive speech, occupational or physical therapy, and counseling. There is also a full-time nurse on site.
The BELC is approved by the New York City Department of Education as an Interim Alternate Bilingual Program (IABP), which means that bilingual speech therapy services, bilingual teaching staff, bilingual social services staff, and a bilingual multidisciplinary evaluation team are provided to serve children and families whose primary language is Spanish. The early learning center also participates in the New York State Education Department Breakfast and Lunch Program, as part of the Child Nutrition Program, and serves a daily breakfast, lunch and snack to students, at no cost to families.
