New Britain is approximately 9 miles southwest of Hartford and is considered a working class city, coined “The Hardware City” due to high number of manufacturing businesses. New Britain’s rich and diverse population has always been present in the city. Today, New Britain’s top three largest populations are 43.7% White, 40.7% Hispanic, 10.3% Black.
New Britain is home to 3 higher education institutions: Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), Charter Oak State College and Lincoln Technical Institute. Central Connecticut State University and New Britain Public Schools have a strong and long-standing partnership of creating a college to CSDNB career pipeline. While this partnership has proven to be quite successful, both CCSU and New Britain Public Schools have been challenged with the not having a diverse pool of teacher candidates to hire.
New Britain Public Schools has 10 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and one comprehensive high school. 2 of the 4 middle schools are unique as one is district-wide lottery school that offers a comprehensive Spanish program and the other middle school is Gifted and Talented placement school.
